Kamila Stawniak, M.Sp.Ed. CCC-SLP

Speech - language pathologist

Hello,

It's Kamila, the bilingual SLP you heard of, and if you have not yet, now it is a good time to get to know me a little better.

I was educated and got my first experience in Poland. After graduation in 2010 I wanted to learn more about other cultures and came to the USA as an AuPair with my master degree in speech. I decided to pursue my further training in the USA because I was amazed about the majority of the research and therapy methods that are discovered and taught here. In Poland I worked in the acute stroke and neurology units in the municipal hospital in Poznan. Since the approval of my credentials in 2018, I had been working in Maryland in elementary schools helping kids with speech and language disorders to improve their communication skills, and enhance pragmatic skills. I worked with kids and teenagers within autism spectrum disorder to boost their skills in communicating their needs and wants, more efficiently, using AAC systems. Later, during COVID-19, I decided to shift my focus on the fragile aging population and started working in nursing homes. I continue to use my expertise to improve the quality of life of residents. Everyday, my patients and I find proper strategies and exercises to improve their swallowing skills, improve word finding skills to express themselves, boost their memory with available strategies and external aids, and to make their speech more intelligible. Speech therapy world is so exciting with the variety of skills we as speech -language pathologists get to address. Imagine the joy and satisfaction I get to see when my patients can finally eat their favorite foods and socialize with their loved ones during meal time. Sometimes, my work focuses on finding foods and strategies to allow my patients to safely consume the nutritional and hydration minimum. At times, when the alternative way of oral intake is needed to meet the nutritional requirements, we work together on sustaining the swallow function by consuming pleasure foods. My methods are crafted for each individual to guarantee safety and efficiency in food intake by mouth in conditions like stroke, neurodegenerative disease, or idiopathic dysphagia where we are not able to clearly explain the underlying cause of surfaced symptoms.

Throughout my professional life I have worked with kids and adults and collaborated with many families and different professionals to meet the goals of my patients/ clients. I believe the 4 Cs are crucial when you think about communication. Connection between parties allows for building a powerful rapport with my clients. Clarity in setting goals and learning about client’s expectations is a part of the patient’s drive approach. Competence in knowing available therapy methods and adjusting them accordingly to patient’s needs and progress. Therapy is not a cookie-cutter experience, it is unique with each individual. Community. When we care about the closest environment and take steps to address what we see, the world already becomes a better place.

I can't wait to hear your story and see what areas of your life you would like to address with me to live a more fulfilled life with harmony and joy. Let's meet. I am here for you.
